Four St. Charles Business Receive Employer of the Year Awards

Mayor Sally Faith bestowed Employer of the Year honors on four St. Charles area businesses during the May 6 general membership meeting of the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce held at the St. Charles Convention Center. 

“It is an honor to recognize the successful efforts of local business owners in our community,” said Mayor Faith.  “These companies make significant investments in the city of St. Charles, and as employers provide their staff a wide range of support and benefits.  In addition,” Faith added, “these local businesses have made generous commitments to paying it forward through contributions to various charitable and civic organizations.  Their strides are commendable and set an example worth emulating, which is exactly why each of these businesses is deserving of this recognition.”

St. Charles annually presents the Employer of the Year award in the categories of service, manufacturing/industrial, and retail.  In 2011, a fourth category was added to the line-up known as the Jack Heck Award, recognizing a business that demonstrates the spirit of community outreach and family values.  The 2014 business honorees are:

Global Spectrum at the St. Charles Convention Center, 1 Convention Center Plaza (63303) – 636-669-3000
     The St. Charles Convention Center under the auspices of Global Spectrum opened in 2005 and today employs 36 full-time and 88 part-time employees.  Global Spectrum manages one of the few venues in the nation operating with a positive profit margin.  In fact, they achieved their highest gross revenues ever in 2013, surpassing their previous record set in 2011.  Global Spectrum rewards employees for quality customer service through their “How You Doin'?” program, which recognizes staff on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.  Global Spectrum is an active community supporter through hosting annual events such as the Kids Block Party and the Touch a Truck Program. The organization also hosts its annual Helping Hands for the Holidays event, which in 2013 offered a meal to more than 1,400 attendees, during which time they also gave away donated gifts to the tune of 500 coats, 500 hats and scarves, 220 pairs of gloves and a number of warm, winter blankets.

     TLD Concepts, Inc. of St. Charles, owned by Lou and Tom Lenkman, provides motorized solutions for mobile medical industries.  The company, incorporated in 1995, is located at 953 Harmsted Court, and currently employs 10 staff members.  According to the company’s mission statement, TLD Concepts provides customers with the technology to mobilize virtually any type, weight, or size medical device for use in their facility or outside their facility with community outreach programs.  The company’s unique ability to ergonomically and securely motorize equipment enables the company’s customer base to provide the latest in technological advances.  TLD Concepts participates in the Hire a Hero program and presently employs two military veterans.  The company’s leadership also rewards staff on an annual basis with a percentage of the company’s profits based upon each employee’s work ethic, along with their input as it relates to lean and efficient manufacturing principles.

     Safeway Tire has been in operation for 50 years and is a proud, family-owned business.  The company, located at 2539 West Clay, currently has 12 employees on its payroll.  According to their website, the company’s philosophy is simple:  “We never promise more than we can deliver, and we always try to give our customers more than they expect.  The people of St. Charles know customer service is not enough.  And we do, too…that’s why we strive for customer loyalty every day.”  Jay Moore, owner of Safeway Tire, serves on the advisory board for Automotive Technology at Lewis & Clark Career Center giving back to students in the local community.  He also serves on the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Review Board and is an active member at Harvester Christian Church.  Staff members at Safeway assist vehicle owners experiencing financial difficulties by keeping their automobiles serviced and on the road.  They also host informational automotive seminars for women to help educate and instill confidence when it comes to having their vehicles repaired.

     Molly-O’s, has been named the 2014 Jack Heck Employer of the Year for the company’s dedication to community, faith and family.  Molly-O’s Tropical Sno & Chili Shack currently has 10 employees on staff.  Molly-O’s Tropical Snow opened in June 2010, and the Chili Shack portion of the business followed in November 2011.  Located at 3779 New Town Boulevard, locals anxiously await each seasonal opening, which traditionally begins in March.  Molly-O’s donates snow cones in the summer and pots of chili in the winter to local churches, the Salvation Army’s local soup kitchen and The Bridge in New Town.  The company supports numerous causes like Orchard Farm School District, Paint New Town Pink, Lewis & Clark Center Blood Drive and Backstoppers.  Staff members at Molly-O’s also support our area’s youth by providing job opportunities for a number of young people throughout the local community.

The city’s annual economic development awards presentation took place as a part of the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting at the Convention Center, in conjunction with the chamber’s Small Business Person of the Year Award.  Cliff Heitmann, President of Bax Engineering Co., Inc., was the chamber’s 2014 recipient (211 Point West Blvd., 63301 – 636-928-5552 –
